Terror warning? Sandton LGBT+ Pride march is colorful

Saturday saw the first LGBT+ Pride march in Johannesburg since the Covid-19 pandemic, despite US warnings of a probable terrorist strike in the vicinity.

Marchers chanted, cheered, and waved rainbow-colored flags amidst a strong police presence. The event proceeded without interruptions.

The US government announced on Wednesday that it had obtained intelligence that terrorists may be plotting an assault on huge crowds on Saturday in Sandton, the suburb of Johannesburg where the march took place.

It warned personnel to avoid major public events and huge people over the weekend in the area, but did not specify that the Pride march would be the target.

Lethuxolo Shange, a 24-year-old doctor participating in the march, said, “Someone threatening to kill us is very, very terrifying, but it’s not the first time and, tragically, it won’t be the last.” Therefore, we will not allow others to terrorize us.

The inaugural Johannesburg Pride march took place 33 years ago. South Africa legalized same-sex marriage in 2006, making it the only African nation to do so.
