On Thursday morning, the Tembisa hospital employees organized a memorial service for a dead co-worker who was shot seven times by her lover, a police officer.
The nurse, Lebogang Monene, was in her thirties when he shot her at the Tembisa Hospital on Wednesday morning.
Dr. Ashley Mthunzi, CEO of Tembisa Hospital, praised Monene.
“She tried to change the landscape and narrative of Tembisa hospital.
She was too meticulous in her tasks, and took her patients and this job seriously.”
“She donned her uniform and came to work with no knowledge of what was going to happen.”
He said they were shattered when they received the news.
“The first call I made was to the MEC and she was equally shocked.
“It is not the fact that she was our nurse, it’s the fact that she was a woman first.”
He said it underscored the gender-based violence scourge, “we have a challenge with femicide on the rise.”

Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi said following the tragic incident they had a meeting with various organized labour structures.
She said during the meeting with management and labour unions at Tembisa Hospital a decision to review and implement security measures that would enhance the protection of staff and patients.
Monene according to her brother, Daniel Thobakgale, leaves behind two young boys.
Thobakgale said the relationship between his sister and the police officer was a toxic one.
He added that the police officer would tell her he was going to shoot her when they would have arguments leading to her leaving the relationship.
“Our hearts are in pain at the moment and we are still overwhelmed by what happened,” said Thobakgale.
