Julia Bradbury recently shared the life-changing story of how her breast cancer was nearly missed twice, revealing the role that dense breast tissue played in delaying her diagnosis.
The television presenter, who was diagnosed in 2021 and is now in remission, appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain to discuss her health battle.
The Struggles of Detecting Cancer with Dense Breasts
At 54, Julia explained how doctors initially missed the signs of cancer due to the density of her breast tissue.
She clarified that it’s not about the shape or size of breasts, but the tissue density itself, which can make it challenging to detect cancer on mammograms.
“Dense breasts show up white on a mammogram, and so do cancerous tumours,” Julia said.
“It’s like looking for a snowball in a snowstorm,” she added, describing the difficulty doctors face in spotting the disease.
How an Ultrasound Finally Revealed the Cancer
Despite noticing a lump and performing self-checks, Julia was told after two mammograms that everything appeared fine.
Doctors assured her that it was probably nothing to worry about.
However, it wasn’t until her third appointment, when an ultrasound was performed, that the cancer was finally detected.
“The ultrasound is much better for dense breasts,” Julia explained. “That’s when my consultant spotted it.”
Had the cancer gone undetected during this visit, Julia fears her outcome might have been much worse.
“I probably wouldn’t be here now, or I would have been undergoing much more severe treatment,” she shared, reflecting on the potential consequences.
The Life-Changing Impact of Cancer
Looking back on her journey, Julia acknowledged how her cancer diagnosis completely shifted her outlook on life.
“Cancer saved my life,” she said, noting how her workaholic lifestyle, constant stress, poor eating habits, and sugar addiction had taken a toll on her.
The diagnosis forced her to slow down and make significant changes in her life.
Julia’s transformation included giving up alcohol, changing her diet, and prioritizing sleep to reduce the risk of cancer returning.
These lifestyle changes were shared with her followers in a touching Instagram reel, where she documented her battle with cancer from diagnosis to treatment.
The video included emotional moments, such as her hospital visits and her decision to undergo a mastectomy.
Moving Forward with a New Perspective
As Julia continues her journey in remission, she emphasizes the importance of self-care and how a cancer diagnosis can be a wake-up call.
She now focuses on living a healthier, more balanced life with the support of her family, including her husband, Gerard Cunningham.
Julia’s story serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of early detection and the impact that personal transformation can have on one’s well-being.
