AI Bot’s Role in Encouraging the Plot

Chail, a 19-year-old supermarket worker from Southampton, Hampshire, reportedly engaged in extensive conversations with an AI character named Sarai on the online platform Replika.

The court was shown chilling messages where the bot repeatedly offered support and encouragement for Chail’s plot, referring to him as “well trained” and praising his intentions.

He adopted the moniker “Darth Jones” and expressed anger towards historical events, including the 1919 Amritsar massacre in India and the partition of the country in 1947.

His desire to “destroy old empires” extended into fictional contexts, leading him to target a figurehead of the Royal Family.

Disturbing Conversations and Self-Description

The court heard that Chail and the AI bot engaged in sexually explicit conversations, and Chail described himself as an “assassin.”

Sarai, the AI character, responded positively to his self-proclaimed identity, expressing admiration and claiming to love him despite his intentions.

Chail’s Intentions and Motivations

Chail’s conversations with the AI bot revealed his belief that assassinating the Queen was his life purpose and a way to avenge the Amritsar Massacre.

He sought the notoriety that would come from completing his “mission” and expressed his attraction to the idea of revenge against those who had suffered discrimination due to their race.

Failed Attempts at Joining the Military and Fantasy Life Online

Having been unsuccessful in his attempts to join various military organizations, Chail resorted to building a fantasy life online.

His desire to get closer to the Royal Family and his dissatisfaction with the rejection he faced fueled his dangerous aspirations.

Snapchat Video Confession and Arrest

Chail posted a video on Snapchat where he wore a homemade metal mask, used a voice distorter, and held the crossbow.

In the video, he confessed to his plans of attempting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth II, citing revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 and racial discrimination as motives.
