Taliban reportedly execute ISIS leader behind Kabul airport suicide bombing
The Taliban have reportedly executed the leader of an ISIS splinter cell responsible for the suicide bombing that killed 170 people at Kabul airport in August 2021.
This comes after a series of brutal battles between the two rival factions in Afghanistan.
Taliban operation against ISIS cell
The killing of the ISIS leader is believed to be a result of a Taliban operation against the group operating in Afghanistan.
The Taliban has been trying to consolidate their power base across the vast country since the US and its allied forces withdrew in 2021.
US officials deny involvement
US officials have denied any involvement in the attack, which was reportedly masterminded by the Taliban.
Thirteen American troops were killed in the terrorist attack at the airport.
Bereaved family members informed
The bereaved family members of those killed in the attack have been informed of the ISIS leader’s killing by US military officials.
However, no information regarding the leader’s identity or how he was killed has been released.
Ongoing battle between ISIS and Taliban
ISIS and the Taliban have been engaged in a bloody battle since the US withdrawal, especially against the country’s minority groups.
The ISIS offshoot in Afghanistan, called Islamic State-Khorasan, is believed to have up to 4,000 members and has cemented itself as the Taliban’s most bitter enemy.
US warns Taliban
The US has warned the Taliban to ensure that they give no safe haven to terrorists, whether from al-Qaida or the Islamic State.
White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby has made it clear that it is the Taliban’s responsibility to ensure this.
