T21 Families Support Organization lauded for supporting children with Down Syndrome

NAIROBI, 9th October, 2021, (PSCU)–First Lady Margaret Kenyatta’s Beyond Zero Initiative on Saturday lauded T21 Families Support Organization (T21 FSO) for championing the welfare of children with Down Syndrome in the country.

T21 FSO was formed five years ago by parents with children with Down Syndrome and has over the years attracted partners who include doctors, the Government, parents and non-governmental organizations to rally support for the children and their families.

Speaking during a medical camp hosted by T21 FSO at Ability Therapy Place in Nairobi County, Beyond Zero’s Coordinator Angella Langat commended the organization for its advocacy, awareness creation and empowerment programmes.

“I am also pleased to note the tireless efforts being undertaken by T21 Family Support Organization and your partners not only in advocacy, education, support and awareness creation but also in empowering people living with Down Syndrome, their families and friends,” Ms Langat said.

She noted that the organization’s community outreach and partnership initiatives were similar to Beyond Zero’s advocacy model, and assured its leadership of her institution’s continued partnership.

Ms Langat called for joint efforts in diagnosis and assessment, inclusion and integration for equal access to health and education services to enable children with Down Syndrome attend school and live meaningful lives.

“As Beyond Zero, we will continue to register children with disabilities at our medical safaris so that they can benefit from Government services. And also advocate for inclusive education and equal access to health care services,” she said.

The Chairperson of T21 FSO Penny Kiriga decried societal stigma associated with Down Syndrome and thanked her organization’s partners for their continued support.

During the medical camp, services ranging from free medical assessment and therapy, diagnostic services, speech-language therapy and physiotherapy among others were offered in partnership with doctors and various volunteer groups.
