Fresh off their promotion glory, Sunderland aren’t wasting any time strengthening their squad—and now, it looks like they’re on the verge of landing a pretty big name from La Liga.
Reinildo in Advanced Talks With Sunderland
Mozambican international Reinildo Isnard Mandava, better known simply as Reinildo, is reportedly close to joining Sunderland on a two-year deal.
The 31-year-old left-back, who’s been a key figure at Atletico Madrid, has also caught the eye of Leeds United and Crystal Palace this summer.
According to The Sun, while Palace had some discussions with him, Sunderland are now leading the race and an official agreement looks just around the corner.
Atletico Veteran Could Arrive on a Free
Reinildo’s contract with Atletico is set to expire next week, which means Sunderland could sign him on a free transfer.
That’s a potentially huge win for the Black Cats, especially considering his experience at top European clubs.
The left-back joined Atletico Madrid from Lille in January 2022 and went on to rack up over 100 appearances under Diego Simeone.
He’s known for his reliability at the back and his ability to hold his own in high-pressure matches.
Champions League and Club World Cup Experience
Reinildo isn’t just any defender. He was part of Lille’s shock Ligue 1 title-winning squad in 2021—when they famously beat Paris Saint-Germain to the trophy.
More recently, he played for Atletico Madrid in the FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S. earlier this summer.
Although Atletico won two out of three games, their 4-0 loss to PSG meant they were knocked out on goal difference—a tough pill to swallow for the Spanish giants.
Sunderland’s Transfer Window in Full Swing
Reinildo would be Sunderland’s second major signing since their Championship play-off triumph.
The club has already locked in French midfielder Enzo Le Fée from Roma for around £19 million, thanks to a clause triggered by their promotion.
While new names are arriving, some familiar faces have also moved on.
Rising stars Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson have both left the club since the end of last season.
An International Veteran Joins the Mix
Adding even more credibility to Reinildo’s profile is his international experience.
He’s been capped 49 times for Mozambique since debuting in 2013 and continues to be a key figure for the national team.
A Statement Signing for Premier League Ambitions
If the deal goes through, Reinildo could prove to be a smart and seasoned addition to a Sunderland squad that’s gearing up for life back in the Premier League.
His wealth of experience and composure could be just what the team needs as they look to make a strong return to the top flight.
