Stephen A. Smith endorses Governors Josh Shapiro and Wes Moore as top Democratic candidates to challenge Donald Trump in the United States

As speculation ramps up about the 2028 presidential election, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith has openly revealed which Democratic politicians he’s backing to take on former President Donald Trump.

Known for his candid commentary, Smith didn’t hold back when discussing his favorite candidates during a recent segment of Straight Shooter.

A Fan Calls In From Wisconsin

The discussion began when a caller named Mark from Wisconsin reached out.

Identifying himself as a “lifetime liberal,” Mark admitted uncertainty about which Democrats should receive support heading into the next election.

Mark mentioned Gavin Newsom as a possibility but admitted he wasn’t entirely sold.

That’s when Smith stepped in, sharing his own opinions without hesitation.

Smith Names His Top Two Picks

“I’ve got two candidates that are my favorites,” Smith said. “I’m not telling you to vote the way I vote.

I’m just being honest and open about my two favorite candidates.”

He then made his picks clear: “I love Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Governor Wes Moore from Maryland—those are my two, not necessarily in that order.”

Wes Moore Earns High Praise

Smith reserved his strongest praise for Moore, calling him “the real deal.”

“When you talk about somebody that can walk and communicate across the aisle and fixate on getting things done, Wes Moore is somebody I would strongly advise you not to ignore,” Smith said. “You better pay attention to this man.”

Although he doubted Moore would run, Smith insisted that the Maryland governor deserves serious consideration.

Mixed Feelings About Gavin Newsom

On the other hand, Smith offered a more nuanced take on California Governor Gavin Newsom.

He complimented Newsom’s presentation and debating skills: “Gavin Newsom is smart, articulate, bright, very polished, and can debate with the best of them.”

But he also highlighted potential hurdles for a national campaign: “When it comes to the general election, all anybody will do is point to the cost of living in California, the economy, homelessness, and businesses leaving the state. That’s going to hurt him.”

Smith also criticized Newsom’s leadership style, suggesting that while Newsom has a kind heart, he sometimes struggles with saying “no” when tough decisions are required.

Context: Newsom’s Rising Popularity

While Smith didn’t directly mention the 2028 election, his remarks come amid growing speculation that Newsom may be preparing a presidential run. Polls show that the California governor has surged in popularity among Democratic voters.

A recent Emerson College poll found Newsom with 25 percent support, up from just 12 percent in June.

Newsom’s recent social media overhaul—adopting a bolder style reminiscent of Trump’s own online approach—has also helped him gain attention.

Meanwhile, he has actively challenged redistricting efforts by GOP states and sued the Trump administration over its handling of the California National Guard during anti-ICE protests.

Democrats Still Searching for Leadership

Following the 2024 election loss, the Democratic Party remains in search of a unifying figure to energize its base.

Smith’s commentary underscores the growing debate over which candidates can bridge divides, communicate effectively, and ultimately take on Donald Trump in a future presidential race.
