Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus calls up veteran winger Makazole Mapimpi to Cape Town squad after Siya Kolisi and Kurt-Lee Arendse suffer injuries against Australia

The Springboks have been hit with a double blow just days before their second Rugby Championship showdown against Australia in Cape Town.

Captain Siya Kolisi and star back Kurt-Lee Arendse are both sidelined after picking up injuries in last weekend’s 38-22 defeat.

With the pair set to spend the next few weeks out of action, head coach Rassie Erasmus has wasted no time reshuffling his squad.

Mapimpi Back in Green and Gold

To strengthen the backline, Erasmus has called up none other than Makazole Mapimpi, one of South Africa’s most celebrated wingers.

The experienced speedster will join his teammates in Cape Town on Monday night and is expected to bring his trademark energy and finishing power.

At 35, Mapimpi is still going strong. With 47 Test matches and 33 tries under his belt, the two-time Rugby World Cup winner adds depth and valuable leadership to the squad.

Covering the Gaps

Interestingly, Erasmus decided against reinforcing the loose forwards, where the team already has solid options.

Instead, his focus was on ensuring balance in the backline following Arendse’s absence.

Mapimpi’s inclusion not only fills that gap but also provides the Springboks with a reliable finisher who knows how to deliver under pressure.

Match Details and Kick-Off

The big clash takes place at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 23 August, with kick-off scheduled for 17:10.

Fans will be eager to see whether the Springboks can bounce back after their loss and if Mapimpi can make an immediate impact on his return.
