A heartbreaking tragedy struck the football world as Spanish authorities confirmed the passing of Croatian footballer Jakov Jelkic.
The 24-year-old, who played for Swiss third-division club FC Granges-Paccot, was found dead in the waters of Alicante on Monday.
Night Out Before Disappearance
Jelkic had traveled to Spain with his team for a match last weekend.
After the game, he and his teammates visited a nightclub in the Levante dock area of Alicante.
However, concern arose when he failed to return to the team’s hotel the next morning.
His disappearance was reported, and an extensive search began.
Investigation Points to an Accidental Drowning
According to Cristian Plazas, a spokesperson for the National Police of Alicante, authorities launched an investigation after Jelkic’s body was discovered.
Based on initial findings, officials believe he accidentally fell into the sea and drowned.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured him stumbling out of a nightclub near the port, suggesting that alcohol consumption may have played a role.
However, further inquiries are ongoing.
FC Granges-Paccot Pays Tribute
Following confirmation of Jelkic’s passing, his club, FC Granges-Paccot, shared an emotional tribute, mourning the loss of their young player.
“It is with great sadness that we learned of Jakov’s passing,” the club stated.
“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, teammates, and all those who knew him from near and far.His memory will forever be engraved in our hearts.
