South Africans facing high unemployment rates were tragically deceived by fake job offers that promised a better life, only to end up trapped in Myanmar under horrific conditions.
What seemed like a dream opportunity quickly turned into a nightmare for 23 South Africans who were coerced into a criminal operation far from home.
False Promises Lead to Desperate Ordeal
The victims were drawn into the deceit through social media ads that promised lucrative job opportunities in Myanmar.
The ads spoke of attractive salaries, free accommodation, travel expenses, and other benefits, which enticed them to leave South Africa for what seemed like a fresh start.
However, instead of a promising job, they found themselves forced into illegal activities, including running online scams, and subjected to physical and emotional abuse.
Rescue Brings the Victims Back to Safety
After months of suffering, the victims’ ordeal ended with a miraculous rescue.
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) successfully brought the group back home to South Africa.
The rescue came after a major operation by Myanmar authorities, who raided a cybercrime compound.
Over 7,000 people, including the South Africans, were freed from the grips of traffickers.
Shocking Conditions in Myanmar
The South Africans endured unbearable conditions while being held captive.
For over four months, they were subjected to forced labor, physical punishment, and mental abuse.
The traffickers forced them to work 16-hour shifts running cyber scams and threatened violence if they refused.
The victims were deprived of proper food, clean water, and medical care, all while being held under constant armed guard.
Support and Care for the Victims
Upon their return to South Africa, the victims are being offered crucial support.
DIRCO has arranged for the Department of Social Development to provide social workers who will assist the victims.
In addition to medical assessments, the victims will also receive psychosocial support to help them recover from their traumatic experience.
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) will ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice, continuing to work with government agencies for the safety and well-being of the victims.
