Now that tax season is officially underway in South Africa, many taxpayers are getting auto-assessment notifications from the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

But if you’ve changed your phone number or email recently, you might’ve missed the memo.

Whether you’re waiting for your auto-assessment or prepping to file manually, it’s crucial that your contact and banking details are up to date on SARS eFiling.

Here’s how you can make sure SARS knows how to reach you—and where to send any refunds.

When Is Tax Season Happening?

Let’s break down the key dates first:

  • Auto-assessments were rolled out between 7 and 20 July 2025.

  • If you’re a non-provisional taxpayer and didn’t receive an auto-assessment, your filing season is open from 21 July to 20 October 2025.

  • For provisional taxpayers, you’ll have until 19 January 2026 to submit your tax return.

So, before you start anything, make sure your details are right on SARS eFiling.

How to Update Your Details on SARS eFiling

Here’s your step-by-step guide to making sure SARS has your latest info:

  1. Head to sarsefiling.co.za.

  2. Log in with your username and password.

  3. Click on “Home”.

  4. Go to “SARS Registered Details”.

  5. Select “Maintain SARS Registered Details”.

From here, you can update:

  • Addresses

  • Bank accounts

  • Email addresses

  • Trading name details

  • eFiling security details

If everything looks good—great, you’re done! If not, just make the changes right there on the screen.

Don’t forget to hit “Done” and then “Submit” to save your updates.

What If You’ve Changed Your Email or Cell Number?

This one’s important: SARS uses your email or cell number to send you a one-time pin (OTP) when you reset your password or username.

If these security details have changed, you might get locked out.

To check your current details:

  • Log in at sarsefiling.co.za.

  • Click on “My Profile” in the top-left corner.

  • Review your email and phone number.

If only one detail has changed, you can fix it online.

But if both are outdated, you’ll need to:

 Call SARS at 0800 00 7277, or
Visit a SARS branch (just make sure to book an appointment first).
