South African National Parks announces temporary closure of main R27 gate as West Coast National Park undergoes major upgrades near Langebaan

If you’re dreaming of a quiet escape to West Coast National Park sometime soon, you’ll want to take note of some important changes.

One of the park’s main entry points is temporarily out of action—and it’s all part of a big upgrade plan.

The R27 Gate Closes for a Facelift

South African National Parks (SANParks) has confirmed that the R27 Gate—the main southern access into West Coast National Park—will be closed until 14 June.

The closure, which began in February, is to allow for some much-needed maintenance and modernization.

So, if you were planning to head into the park via the R27, you’ll need to take a little detour.

All traffic is now being redirected to the Langebaan Gate, which is situated on the northern edge of the park.

What’s Changing at the R27 Gate?

This isn’t just routine patch-up work. SANParks is investing in improvements to make your future visits smoother and more enjoyable.

They’re focusing on better traffic flow, a more streamlined ticketing system, and upgraded visitor facilities.

It’s all part of a broader effort to improve the park’s infrastructure and enhance the overall visitor experience.

So yes, a temporary detour now—but hopefully worth it in the long run.

Why West Coast National Park Remains a Must-Visit

Despite the access changes, West Coast National Park is still very much open for adventure—and it’s a favourite for good reason. Just 90 minutes from Cape Town, this coastal gem offers everything from white sand beaches and turquoise waters to the unique inland landscapes of fynbos.

If you visit in spring, don’t miss the Postberg section, which bursts into bloom with wildflowers during August and September.

It’s hands-down one of the most breathtaking floral displays in South Africa.

Don’t Miss Langebaan Lagoon

And since you’ll be rerouted through the north, it’s a perfect excuse to spend more time at Langebaan Lagoon.

The calm, salty waters are ideal for kayaking, kite surfing, and birdwatching.

It’s a peaceful, photogenic spot that’s hard not to love.
