The South African government has reaffirmed its dedication to protecting its citizens and maintaining regional stability in light of the recent unrest in Mozambique.
Concerns Over Unrest in Mozambique
Authorities expressed concern about ongoing protests in parts of Mozambique, including reports of individuals escaping from a maximum-security prison during the chaos.
These developments have naturally sparked worries among South Africans about potential cross-border impacts.
“South Africa remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its citizens and upholding regional stability,” stated the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) on Sunday.
Strengthening Border Operations
To address these concerns, NATJOINTS has intensified its efforts along the South Africa-Mozambique border.
These measures aim to curb any opportunistic crimes that might arise during or after the protests.
“The Government of South Africa is actively engaging the Government of Mozambique at a bilateral level to address these concerns and explore sustainable solutions,” the statement added.
Collaborative Efforts Between Nations
South Africa and Mozambique are working together through strong diplomatic channels to implement measures that restore order and bolster security in affected areas.
The collaboration underscores the spirit of partnership and mutual respect between the two nations.
Supporting Regional Stability
The South African government emphasized the importance of regional security and pledged its support to Mozambique in restoring peace and stability.
“To demonstrate South Africa’s commitment towards finding a peaceful resolution, His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent Professor Sydney Mufamadi as a special envoy to engage all relevant stakeholders,” the statement highlighted.
