In April, she shared that she had undergone surgery on her right knee and was awaiting a similar procedure on her left knee.

“My spinal cord is actually also giving me problems, and I do not have medical aid.
I go to a government hospital, Charlette Maxeke Hospital.”
Even in the face of these challenges, she continued to show up on set, determined to bring characters to life with the same energy and authenticity that fans had come to love.

Nandi Nyembe’s family, alongside the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, confirmed her death on the evening of Saturday, 23 August 2025.

“It is with profound sorrow that the Nyembe Family, together with the National Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, announce the passing of one of South Africa’s most treasured icons of the arts, Mam’ Nandi Nyembe,” it read.

A teacher, a guide, and a mother to this nation, she carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart.
Through her life and work, she gave our people pride and our stories, a purpose.”

She revealed that she had spent roughly R88,000 on her son’s urgent medical treatment, leaving her savings depleted.
Highlighting the lack of pensions and royalties in South Africa’s entertainment industry, she shared how this left her financially vulnerable.
Despite these hardships, Nandi Nyembe remained fiercely independent, refusing handouts and continuing to work whenever possible.
