South African Car Legends Explore Hidden Classics Beyond the Iconic Nissan Sentra and VW CitiGolf

When we think about legendary cars in South Africa, several names automatically come to mind.

Our previous list of South African motoring icons covered the beloved Nissan Sentra, the VW CitiGolf, Opel Superboss, BMW 325iS, and the Ford Sierra XR8, all of which hold a special place in the hearts of local enthusiasts.

But as we received feedback from our insightful readers, it became clear that there are even more cars that deserve the title of South African car royalty, ones that are rare, valuable, and just as memorable.

Let’s delve deeper into these lesser-known classics that have shaped South African motoring culture.

The Chevrolet Firenza Can Am: A True Performance Monster

In the early ‘70s, South African racing legend Basil van Rooyen managed to convince General Motors to install a Chevy 5.0-litre V8 engine into the Firenza GT coupe, creating one of the most potent performance cars of its era.

A limited batch of 100 cars was produced for homologation purposes, along with six for local racing.

The result was a 216 kW powerhouse capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Even by today’s standards, this is incredibly impressive for a car that weighed only 1,100 kg.

Known for its rear-wheel power and exhilarating slides, the Firenza Can Am remains a coveted classic in South Africa.

Ford Capri Perana: South Africa’s V8 Dream Car

When we talk about South African car royalty, the Ford Capri Perana is a name that simply cannot be overlooked.

Developed in the early ‘70s to meet racing homologation, this vehicle was the brainchild of Basil Green, who took the European Ford Capri and merged it with a Ford Windsor 5.0-litre V8 engine

. The result was a car that produced 205 kW and 270 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds.

Each car was hand-built, with special badges and features, and only about 500 units were produced, making it a rare and highly sought-after collector’s item worldwide.

BMW Shadowline: A South African Exclusive

While we’ve already covered the iconic BMW E30 325iS ‘Gusheshe’ in our previous list, it’s impossible not to mention the Shadowline package, a unique South African performance model.

In the early ‘90s, due to international sanctions preventing the import of the BMW E30 M3, BMW South Africa crafted their own high-performance variant.

The Shadowline featured a 2.7-litre straight-six motor, producing 145 kW and 226 Nm of torque.

It boasted a 0 to 100 km/h time of 7.4 seconds, along with exclusive touches such as 15-inch BBS alloy wheels, sports suspension, and a close-ratio gearbox.

This model remains a favorite among Mzansi car enthusiasts.

The Ford Cortina XR6 Interceptor: A High-Performance Classic

The Ford Cortina XR6 Interceptor is a South African gem that is as intriguing as it is rare.

Initially developed as a high-performance police vehicle during the early ‘80s, the XR6 Interceptor was designed for pursuit duties during apartheid.

Powered by a modified 3.0-litre Essex V6 engine, it produced 118 kW and delivered an impressive 0 to 100 km/h time of 8.8 seconds.

Despite its role as a police car, only about 250 units were built, and they were never legally sold to the public.

This makes the XR6 Interceptor an interesting piece of South African automotive history.

Alfa Romeo GTV6: The V6 Performance Icon

Another standout in South Africa’s motoring history is the Alfa Romeo GTV6, which was produced between 1983 and 1985.

Built to comply with Group One racing homologation rules, the South African version of the GTV6 was fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 engine that delivered 136 kW and 222 Nm of torque. The car could go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.8 seconds, which was impressive for its time.

With only 212 units produced, the GTV6 is now a highly coveted collector’s item, especially with its unique ‘3.0’ badging and the use of parts imported from Alfa Romeo’s performance division.
