South African Battalion in the Eastern side of Democratic Republic of Congo ambushed while on escort duty

Republic of South Africa Battalion (RSABATT) deployed under the umbrella of the United Nations in the Eastern side of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were ambushed while on escort duties by the elements of Illegal Armed Groups.
The RN4 road connects Ituri province to North Kivu province. The vehicles are escorted by security forces because of the presence of armed groups along this regionally important road.
Republic of South Africa Battalion soldiers was ambushed while escorting civilian trucks from the Luna checkpoint to Banwansura checkpoint as it is the responsibility of peacekeepers to protect cargo vehicles.
Allegedly Allied Defence Force (ADF) rebels tried to cut the convoy in the middle, by attacking the middle vehicles. Young lions of the SA National Defence Force under the Leadership of Lieutenant C.D. Ramphele responded accordingly to protect the civilians and their comrades in arms.
At least eight armed groups members were killed during the shootout, unfortunately, three civilians succumbed to injuries. Four AK 47 assault rifles have since been seized with 18 rounds of ammunition. “Train as we fight” proved to be the key to winning a firefight, as South African soldiers came out strong with no fatalities.
Lieutenant Ramphele said, “the first thing that came to my mind when I heard the first bullet from the armed group was Dash, Down, Crawl and Fire.”
The insurgents, who have lost most of the territory they once controlled to soldiers, have thus shown they are still able to carry out skirmish attacks.
