South Africa ’s R50 million donation to Cuba branded ‘a criminal offence’

You get the feeling this is one of those stories that won’t just slip away quietly for the ANC: The government admitted on Wednesday is had sent a R50 million cash donation to Cuba, to help the island nation tackle a ‘hunger crisis’ – and many politicians have been left baffled by the decision.

ANC R50 million Cuba donation ruffles feathers

Hunger, unemployment, and food security are three of the biggest issues currently plaguing South Africa. Millions of citizens, and around half of the population, live in significant poverty. Some critics are now trying to work out why R50 million is being spent in a different hemisphere, rather than being used to address our own problems.
The DA and the IFP have both condemned the relief package, and the FF Plus has also added its voice to the venomous debate. Although the ANC is proud to boast about its long-standing relationship with the socialist republic of Cuba, warm sentiments and diplomatic ties won’t put food on tables here.

Care package likened to ‘an act of crime’

Corne Mulder is the DIRCO spokesperson for the FF Plus. The senior politician has hit out at the ruling party, accusing them of committing an act that ‘borders on a criminal offence’ against its own civilians.

“The ANC government’s donation of R50 million to Cuba, to reportedly assist the country with ‘food security’, is scandalous and borders on a criminal offence against the people of South Africa, especially those who are in need of food and shelter. Millions of people in South Africa are living in abject poverty…”
“Numerous schools in the country still have to make do with pit latrines; the police force’s budget has been cut back while crime flourishes; and doctors working at the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital are yet to be paid their full salaries this year. For South Africa to come to the aid of another country while it needs saving itself is absolutely baffling.”
