South Africa’s Department of Health has now reduced the amount of time needed from your 1st to second Pfizer dose. The minimum time between doses will drop from 42 days to 21.
The department says that while you can now choose to have a different booster to what you were initially vaccinated with, it is still recommending you stick to the same shot.
The main determining factor in your choice should be based on what vaccine is available at the time.
Many medical professionals have long been calling for the opportunity to mix-and-match booster doses. The Pfizer and J&J vaccines are two different types of vaccines. There are studies underway looking at the possibility that being vaccinated with each type will provide stronger protection.
Another change announced by government? You can now get your flu or another type of vaccine at the same time as a COVID jab. Previously, the recommendation was to wait two weeks before jabs.
