South Africa Police releases official statement on heinous murder of 20-year-old in Mpumalanga

Following the brutal murder of a 20-year-old victim in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, the SAPS has issued an official statement. The woman, who has a young daughter, is said to have been the victim of a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) crime committed by her former spouse.
Even more upsetting is the fact that the mother’s body was discovered by children after being discarded near a school. The culprit was apprehended ‘within hours’ of the terrible discovery, according to authorities.

“Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has strongly condemned a horrific incident in which a 20-year-old woman was murdered and her body discovered next to a school in Bushbuckridge. A 25-year-old man, believed to be the father of her child, has since been arrested by local police in connection with the murder.”
“A group of learners notified police of something sinister next to the nearby bushes. The members then went to the place next to Chayaza Secondary School where they made the gruesome discovery of a lifeless body of a woman upon their arrival. The clothes that the woman was wearing were covered in blood.”
SAPS statement

The suspect is due to spend the week in police custody, before he faces court next week. The case is likely to draw significant media and public interest, and SAPS are on high alert for any disorder.

  • A manhunt was launched for the suspect, after police ruled a murder had taken place.
  • The search led officers to the victim’s two-year-old daughter – the suspect is understood to be the father.
  • When the man was arrested, police found a ‘significant item’ belonging the victim, and bloodstained clothes.
  • Several items were confiscated, including the suspected murder weapon.
  • The suspect is expected to appear at the Mkhuhlu Magistrate’s Court on Monday 14 February.

Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela was sickened by the case, and called for an immediate end to all GBV crimes in South Africa. Sadly, the scourge of femicide and abuse of women is widespread in South Africa, and we have a long, long way to go if we want to eradicate brutal acts of criminality like these.
