South Africa Launches Search for New Ambassador to the United States Following Ebrahim Rasool’s Expulsion

South Africa is now on the hunt for a new ambassador to the United States after Ebrahim Rasool was expelled from his post.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has confirmed that the process of selecting his replacement is already in motion.

Rasool’s abrupt removal came after his remarks about former US President Donald Trump ignited controversy, leading to a swift response from Washington.

His statements, which accused Trump of fueling a global white supremacist movement, were deemed unacceptable by the US government.

Why Was Rasool Expelled?

The US Department of State formally declared Rasool persona non grata, meaning he is no longer welcome in the country.

According to official communication, his diplomatic privileges and immunities were revoked as of March 17, and he, along with his dependents, must leave the United States by March 21.

The US government stated that Rasool’s comments were not only offensive but also made it impossible to continue diplomatic engagement with him.

His expulsion has been described as “regrettable” by the South African Presidency, but it appears Washington was unwilling to compromise on the matter.

Who Will Be South Africa’s Next Ambassador?

Now that Rasool has been ordered to leave, attention has shifted to finding his replacement.

Dirco spokesperson Chrispin Phiri confirmed that the process is already underway.

According to Phiri, Rasool will brief President Cyril Ramaphosa and Dirco Minister Ronald Lamola upon his return to South Africa.

This debriefing is expected to focus on the progress Rasool had made before his removal.

He was reportedly in the middle of securing key diplomatic meetings at the White House, making the timing of his expulsion particularly disruptive.

The government will now need to assess how to maintain that momentum with a new ambassador in place.

Who Should Take Over?

With South Africa’s diplomatic relations with the US under scrutiny, the next ambassador will play a crucial role in mending ties and advancing the country’s foreign policy agenda. But who should step into the role?
