Social Development to host a teenage pregnancy round table discussion in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape
The Department of Social Development will host a roundtable dialogue on teenage pregnancy on Wednesday, 23 February 2022 in Lusikiski, Eastern Cape.
The Department chose to start these dialogues in Lusikisiki as it registered the highest number of teenage pregnancy in the OR Tambo district municipality.
Statistics revealed by the national department of health through the Adolescent and Youth District data, OR Tambo District municipality registered the highest number of girls pregnant aged 10 – 14 and 15-19 years during the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 financial years.  The Eastern Cape is one of the Provinces with the highest number of teenage pregnancy. In the 2019/2020 financial year, 671 deliveries were registered by girls between the ages of 10 – 14 years and 17 211 by girls between the ages of 15 and 17 years old in the Eastern Cape.
These high numbers remain a concern for the Department as they demonstrate the vulnerability of children, exposure to violence, sexual  exploitation and child abuse. The focus for tomorrow’s engagement is to have discussions on what interventions can be strengthened and empower the young mothers.
The round-table session will be attended by representatives from the Department of Basic Education, Department of Health, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Traditional Leaders.
Members of the media are invited to attend and cover the roundtable Table discussion scheduled as follows:
