Skip Bayless Reacts to the Cowboys’ Head Coach Hire
Former Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless isn’t hiding his frustration after the Dallas Cowboys made their big decision on their new head coach.
Bayless, who has long been a passionate supporter of the Cowboys, didn’t hold back in expressing his disappointment over the team’s latest move.
The Cowboys’ Controversial Decision
Rather than bringing in an external candidate, like Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore or University of Colorado’s head coach Deion Sanders, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decided to promote Brian Schottenheimer from within.
Schottenheimer had been serving as the team’s offensive coordinator, and now he’s stepping up as the new head coach.
Bayless, clearly upset by the announcement, took to social media to voice his frustration in a 15-minute rant, seemingly in the middle of his workout.
He shared how his family was waiting for him, but when he heard the news, he felt compelled to “unleash” his feelings.
Bayless’ Disappointment with Schottenheimer’s Promotion
Bayless went on to say that his “worst nightmare” had come true.
He couldn’t believe that Schottenheimer, who was Mike McCarthy’s “best buddy,” was now being promoted to head coach of the Cowboys. “He’s just going to be Jerry Jones’ puppet,” Bayless declared.
The 73-year-old media personality was beyond frustrated, calling the decision a “gut shot.”
He also expressed disbelief at the hire, adding that if someone had told him a week ago that Schottenheimer would be promoted, he would’ve laughed it off.
Instead, it became a harsh reality that Bayless struggled to accept.
Reflecting on Missed Opportunities
Bayless didn’t stop there.
He went on to list several other potential candidates the Cowboys could have considered for the job, such as Brian Flores, Pete Carroll, Ben Johnson, and Kellen Moore.
He also mentioned other coaches who had been available in recent seasons, including Dan Quinn and Jim Harbaugh.
But in his eyes, the Cowboys had missed the mark.
Then Bayless turned his anger toward Jerry Jones, whom he feels has too much control over the team’s decisions.
“We’re stuck with Jerry Jones,” Bayless lamented, predicting that Jones would try to sell Schottenheimer as a “chip off the old block” of his late father, Marty Schottenheimer—a well-respected coach, but one who couldn’t ever win the big game.
Bayless Criticizes Schottenheimer’s Coaching Career
Bayless didn’t mince words when it came to Brian Schottenheimer’s long and winding coaching career.
He pointed out that Schottenheimer had been coaching in the NFL for 28 years but had changed jobs 13 times.
“What does that tell you about Brian Schottenheimer?” Bayless questioned, suggesting that someone who switched jobs that often couldn’t possibly be destined to be the head coach of the Cowboys.
He also noted that Schottenheimer, at 51, had never been offered a head coaching job in all his years in the league—until now.
“Why, why, why, why, why?” Bayless asked, clearly frustrated by the Cowboys’ decision.
Schottenheimer’s Coaching Journey
While Schottenheimer may not have been a head coach until now, his coaching journey has been extensive.
He started as an assistant with the St. Louis Rams before joining his father’s staff with the Kansas City Chiefs. After brief stints at Syracuse and USC, he reunited with his father as the quarterbacks coach with the Washington Redskins and later followed him to the San Diego Chargers.
Schottenheimer’s first major role came as the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, where he helped lead the team to back-to-back AFC Championship games.
He also spent time with the St. Louis Rams, the University of Georgia, the Indianapolis Colts, and the Seattle Seahawks, where he made the playoffs three years in a row.
Most recently, he was the passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars before landing with the Cowboys.
What’s Next for the Cowboys?
Schottenheimer’s promotion comes after a season where the Cowboys offense was ranked among the best in the league, but they still fell short in the playoffs.
With uncertainty looming over the offseason, the Cowboys will look to retool their roster and make adjustments for Schottenheimer’s first full season as head coach.
The road ahead will undoubtedly be full of challenges, but only time will tell if the move was the right one for the Dallas Cowboys.
