Siya Kolisi Faces Selection Doubts as Springboks Prepare for High-Stakes Test Against All Blacks in New Zealand

The Springboks are heading into a high-stakes clash with the All Blacks in New Zealand this weekend, but all eyes are on captain Siya Kolisi after a knee injury earlier in the Rugby Championship.

Initially, there were fears the World Cup-winning captain might miss the back-to-back Tests, leaving a big leadership gap in the squad.

Thankfully for South Africa, the latest medical assessments have shown that Kolisi’s injury is not as serious as first feared.

He has been cleared to travel with the team to New Zealand, offering a huge morale boost.

But whether he will actually take to the field for the first Test on Saturday remains uncertain.

Rassie Erasmus Weighs Caution Over Immediate Return

Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus has hinted that the team may take a cautious approach with Kolisi.

Speaking ahead of the match, Erasmus said, “Siya is touch and go this week.

It’s one of those decisions that need to be made with a longer-term view in mind.”

Erasmus confirmed that Kolisi would definitely be available for next weekend’s Test, but for Saturday’s match, the decision will be made later in the week.

“Bringing him back too soon could bugger up six to seven weeks later in the year, so although the heart says he must play, the head says we must wait and watch until Thursday,” he added.

Jesse Kriel Could Step Up as Captain

If Kolisi does not take the field, Jesse Kriel is set to lead the team.

The Springboks face New Zealand at Eden Park at 09:05 (SA time) on Saturday in the third round of the Rugby Championship, a venue known for its intense atmosphere and history of epic clashes.

Erasmus was candid about the challenge ahead, noting the significance of the fixture.

“Facing New Zealand away from home is always a challenge, and playing at Eden Park will make both teams equally desperate,” he said.

“There’s no doubt the players will throw everything out there on Saturday.

There is a massive rivalry between the sides, and the history between us is tremendous.”

Top Two Teams in the World Bring Extra Motivation

Erasmus highlighted that both sides being ranked among the top two teams in the world adds another layer of intensity.

“Playing against New Zealand in their backyard, and knowing that according to the world rankings, we are currently the top two teams in the world, is special, and we don’t need more motivation than that. It’s going to be a nervy week for both teams.”

With Kolisi’s availability still uncertain, the Springboks’ squad is entering a tense final week of preparations, balancing the risk of rushing their captain back against the desire to start the match with their full-strength leader.
