Sir Alex Ferguson, the former Manchester United manager, once called Michael Owen over for racing tips, mistaking the striker’s presence for inclusion in the first team.

Ferguson and Owen bonded over their shared love of horse racing after the coach controversially brought Owen to the Red Devils in 2009.

During a training session, Owen thought he was being called to discuss his inclusion in the team, but Ferguson asked for Owen’s racing expertise.

Owen said he still speaks with Ferguson about football and horses, and that Ferguson still has horses at his stables.

The pair’s bond over horse racing was also confirmed by Dimitar Berbatov, who played with Owen and witnessed the pair talking about racing.

Berbatov said that all the players in the changing room shared racing tips with Ferguson, who has a stable of horses, and Owen, who also owns racehorses.
