The search for a missing seven-month-old baby boy, Chosen Butler, is growing as police in South Dakota investigate an alarming situation involving the child’s temporary caregiver.
According to authorities, a woman who had been trusted to care for the baby reportedly refused to return him, sparking an urgent search and an arrest warrant.
The Missing Baby and the Alleged Kidnapper
Chosen Butler was reported missing on February 28, although he was last seen the day before, on February 27.
Police have named Betty Cross, 38, as the suspect, issuing an arrest warrant for her in connection with the alleged kidnapping of the infant.
Sam Clemens, a spokesperson for the Sioux Falls Police Department, confirmed that Cross had refused to hand over custody of the baby to his family.
However, it remains unclear whether Cross and the child are related in any way.
The arrest warrant for Cross carries a bond of $100,000. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have reassured the public that they believe the baby is safe at this time.
A Trusted Friend Turns into a Suspect
Reports from KXRB reveal that Butler’s parents had considered Betty Cross a close friend, trusting her to care for the child temporarily. This breach of trust has left them devastated and worried.
The baby, who has blue eyes and brown hair, was last seen in the company of Cross, and law enforcement is now asking for anyone with information to come forward.
The South Dakota Missing Persons Clearinghouse has listed Chosen Butler’s description and is actively working to locate both him and Cross.
In an update posted to Facebook, they confirmed that Cross was supposed to hand the child over to the Department of Social Services but has not done so.
Police Believe the Baby Is Safe for Now
Despite the troubling situation, Clemens emphasized that there are currently no safety concerns regarding the baby, as far as the authorities are aware.
He stated that if new information arises, their assessment may change. As of now, they remain hopeful that Butler is safe.
Authorities are also actively searching for Betty Cross, describing her as an African American female with brown eyes and black hair.
The investigation continues, with law enforcement urging anyone who might have information about the whereabouts of the baby or Cross to contact the Sioux Falls Police Department.
As the search continues, the community holds its breath, hoping for the safe return of Chosen Butler.
