Shrek Rave transforms Johannesburg nightclub into a green swamp party as DJs remix iconic movie soundtracks for South African fans

What started as a quirky internet trend in the U.S. and U.K. is finally making its way to South Africa.

The famously chaotic and hilarious Shrek Rave is officially landing in Mzansi this October, bringing with it the ultimate mash-up of EDM beats, cosplay, and pure nostalgia.

A Rave Inspired by Everyone’s Favorite Ogre

Shrek Rave isn’t your average night out—it’s where the iconic soundtracks from all four Shrek movies (and soon to be five) are reimagined as high-energy electronic tracks.

Fans can expect to scream-sing along to All Star and I’m a Believer while dressed as Shrek, Donkey, Fiona, or even the Fairy Godmother.

It’s as much about the costumes and comedy as it is about the music.

Where and When the Party’s Happening

The rave officially kicks off in Johannesburg at Sognage in Strydom Park on Friday, 10 October.

A week later, the party travels down to Cape Town’s District nightclub in District Six on Friday, 17 October.

The event is strictly for over-18s, and organizers are encouraging fans to go all out with green outfits or full-on character cosplay.

Why South Africa Was Chosen

Event co-ordinator Louis Williamson told Time Out that choosing South Africa was an easy decision.

“We’ve heard about the thriving rave culture and energy in South Africa, so it was a no-brainer to bring it here,” he explained.

He added that the first Shrek Rave in London exploded in popularity and quickly became a global phenomenon.

“It’s a fantastic movie with a fantastic soundtrack, and when we paired it with rave culture, it just worked.”

More Than Just Music—It’s a Full Shrek Experience

The night won’t just be about dancing. Attendees can expect live performances, themed games, wild visuals, prize giveaways, and stage décor that captures the playful, chaotic energy of the Shrek universe.

Williamson promises that the production will be unlike anything South African partygoers have seen before.

Tickets Selling Out Fast

Tickets are already live on Quicket.co.za, and demand is proving just as big as Shrek himself.

With sales moving quickly, there’s every chance more dates could be added to satisfy the swamp-loving crowd.

For now, one thing’s certain: this October in South Africa will be anything but ordinary—it’ll be Ogre-tober.
