West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin recently appeared on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” and refused to identify as a Democrat.
When the host, Maria Bartiromo, asked if he still identifies as a Democrat, Manchin responded, “I identify as an American. I’m an American through and through.”
Manchin’s non-committal response is particularly significant for Democrats, who are currently facing a difficult battle to maintain their slim majority in the Senate in the 2024 election.
Manchin is considered one of the key congress members needed to help Democrats retain their majority in the Senate.
Despite being a registered Democrat, Manchin has often voted across party lines and has positioned himself as a moderate.
He has played a critical role in helping Democrats pass legislation in the Senate by acting as a tiebreaker and sometimes voting against his party.
Manchin has not disclosed whether he plans to run for re-election next year.
When asked about it during the Fox News interview, he responded, “My main concern is how we bring this country together? How do we make it work?”
He also emphasized the importance of promoting unity and a common identity among Americans, regardless of their political affiliations.
Manchin represents a state that has historically voted for Republican presidential candidates.
In the 2020 election, West Virginia voted for Donald Trump over Joe Biden by a margin of 39 points.
As such, Manchin’s views and decisions in the Senate often reflect the conservative values of his constituents rather than those of the Democratic Party.
