Senator Alex Padilla gets handcuffed and dragged out of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s press conference in Los Angeles after interrupting immigration remarks

What was supposed to be a standard press conference about immigration enforcement turned into a dramatic scene Thursday when a U.S. senator clashed with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Los Angeles.

The event, focused on the Trump administration’s response to anti-ICE protests, took an unexpected turn that’s now making waves on social media and in political circles.

Senator Padilla Disrupts the Briefing

As Secretary Noem addressed the media, California Senator Alex Padilla suddenly stood up and began shouting over her.

The press conference was still in its early stages—before the Q&A segment—when Padilla demanded to speak.

“I’m Senator Alex Padilla, and I have questions for the secretary,” he yelled, referencing what he called “half a dozen violent criminals” allegedly mishandled by federal authorities.

Security acted quickly. Padilla was physically removed from the room, forced to the ground, and handcuffed by FBI agents—a moment caught on video and later shared by his team.

Why Noem Was in Los Angeles

Noem had traveled to Los Angeles to defend the Trump administration’s approach to immigration enforcement and to address local resistance to federal operations—particularly the wave of anti-ICE protests.

During her remarks, she strongly criticized California’s leadership: “We are not going away.

We are staying here to liberate this city from the socialist and burdensome leadership that this governor and mayor have placed on this country,” she said—just before Padilla’s outburst.

Tensions Escalate, Padilla Removed

Images soon surfaced showing at least three federal officers restraining Padilla on the floor.

Noem later criticized the senator’s behavior, saying he had not made any formal request to speak with her.

“I think everybody in America would agree that that was inappropriate,” Noem said, expressing frustration over the disruption.

Padilla’s Team Responds

Shortly after the incident, Padilla’s office issued a statement defending his actions.

According to his team, the senator was in the federal building for official oversight duties, including a scheduled briefing with General Guillot.

The statement explained that Padilla was listening to Noem’s remarks when he attempted to pose a question.

Instead, he was “forcibly removed by federal agents, forced to the ground and handcuffed.”

Though he wasn’t detained, his team said they were still gathering details.

A Follow-Up Conversation After the Drama

Despite the dramatic exchange, the story didn’t end with the scuffle.

Noem later addressed reporters outside the building and revealed that she and Padilla had eventually spoken in private.

“If he had identified himself and reached out before the event, we could’ve handled things differently,” she said.

“We did end up having a good conversation and exchanged phone numbers to continue dialogue.”

DHS and Secret Service Justify the Response

Homeland Security later released a statement via X (formerly Twitter), defending the actions of security personnel.

According to the agency, Padilla did not wear his Senate security pin and did not properly identify himself.

They claimed Secret Service agents interpreted his approach as a threat: “Senator Padilla chose disrespectful political theatre and interrupted a live press conference without identifying himself… Officers acted appropriately under the assumption he was an attacker.”

They added that a 15-minute meeting between Noem and Padilla occurred afterward.

Padilla’s History of Criticizing Trump Immigration Policies

Padilla, a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration agenda, has consistently pushed back on mass deportation policies.

As the son of Mexican immigrants, he’s positioned himself as a fierce advocate for immigrant communities across California.

This incident highlights the deepening tensions between federal immigration enforcement and California’s progressive leadership—a conflict that shows no signs of cooling down.
