In a highly divisive vote, every Democrat in the U.S. Senate rejected a bill that would have mandated doctors provide life-saving healthcare to infants who survive a failed abortion.
This party-line opposition effectively halted the legislation from moving forward.
Details of the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act”
The bill, introduced by Republican Senator James Lankford, was titled the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” and aimed to guarantee equal protection under the law for any infant born alive following an abortion attempt.
Under the proposed law, healthcare practitioners present at such a birth would be required to treat the infant with the same level of care, skill, and diligence as any other child born at the same gestational age.
Senate Vote Results
Despite gaining majority support in the Senate, the bill failed to reach the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster.
The final vote tally was 52-47, with every Republican senator supporting the bill and every Democrat voting against it.
One Republican senator was absent from the vote.
Senator Lankford Expresses Disappointment
Senator Lankford expressed his disappointment on social media, highlighting how the issue, which he believed should be a matter of common sense, became heavily partisan.
He noted that the Democratic opposition marked the first time the issue had become so divided.
