Two early bogeys set him back, and despite fighting valiantly, he couldn’t match the momentum Scheffler built with every hole.
By the time he reached the penultimate green, Scheffler had executed a stunning chip from the rough, essentially sealing the win.
A Tough Blow for the Scot
The defeat was particularly painful for MacIntyre, who had created his own highlight on Saturday with a 41-foot putt that kept him in control of the leaderboard.
With a potential $3.6 million prize and a shot at the $10 million FedEx Cup bonus on the line, the Oban left-hander had been in prime position.
Despite the setback, MacIntyre could at least take comfort knowing his performance secured a Ryder Cup spot and a healthy £1.6 million payout for finishing second.
MacIntyre Reflects on the Disappointment
Speaking after the round, a visibly frustrated MacIntyre admitted: “Golf ball was going miles for me today.
I hit good shots when I got control of the ball later in the day, but I didn’t feel I controlled distance well, so poor day.
Right now it’s absolutely disastrous. I won’t be positive standing here, it was abysmal without swearing, absolutely abysmal.”
Other Notable Performances
Tommy Fleetwood rebounded with a final-round 67 to tie for fourth, just behind American Maverick McNealy.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy struggled with consecutive double bogeys on the fifth and sixth holes, leaving him unable to make a significant move in the chasing pack.
