With all the chatter online about social grants, many South Africans have been wondering if their monthly SASSA payments will be affected.
Fortunately, Temba Matlou, CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), is putting minds at ease: payments are going out as usual this week, and beneficiaries have no reason to panic.
Millions Depend on SASSA Every Month
SASSA distributes grants to roughly 28 million South Africans—nearly 45% of the population.
This month, the agency has introduced new biometric enrolment procedures alongside stricter income verification policies, which may have caused some concern among recipients.
Calls for Calm on Social Media
Late last month, Matlou took to Twitter/X asking South Africans to remain calm about the social grants.
While his intentions were clear, the public’s worry about the agency’s operations, especially through the end of the year, remains palpable.
The Postbank Partnership Under Scrutiny
A major source of anxiety is SASSA’s relationship with Postbank.
While the bank is still tied to the agency via a Master Service Agreement, uncertainty looms over whether two million SASSA beneficiaries could be affected if that agreement dissolves—a scenario that seems increasingly likely.
Lessons from Past Chaos
South Africans may remember the earlier upheaval when millions rushed to upgrade SASSA gold cards to black cards.
The SA Post Office was unprepared, causing queues, delays, and eventually the abandonment of the upgrade process.
This historical hiccup fuels current fears among grant recipients.
Assurance of No Loss of Welfare
Despite the uncertainties, Matlou reassures: “It is business as usual for SASSA social grants.
We can emphatically state that no eligible beneficiary will lose their grant, irrespective of changes with our partners.
The agency views Postbank like all other banks, and we are working tirelessly to safeguard the welfare of our clients.”
Options Remain Open for Beneficiaries
Grant recipients also have the flexibility to change how they receive their payments at any time.
Matlou emphasizes that SASSA is committed to ensuring that every eligible South African continues to receive the support they depend on.
