SASSA and Postbank Urge Social Grant Beneficiaries in South Africa to Replace Their Gold Cards with Postbank Black Cards Before 20 March 2025

SASSA and Postbank Urge Social Grant Beneficiaries in South Africa to Replace Their Gold Cards with Postbank Black Cards Before 20 March 2025

If you’re a social grant beneficiary still using a SASSA Gold Card, it’s crucial to act soon.

The deadline to replace your Gold Card with the new Postbank Black Card is fast approaching—Thursday, 20 March 2025.

After this date, the SASSA Gold Cards will no longer work for withdrawing cash, making purchases, or even checking balances at ATMs or retailers.

All existing Gold Cards will be blocked and rendered invalid for any transactions.

Why You Need to Switch to the New Postbank Black Card

Postbank began replacing the SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards back in September 2024.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries have already made the switch, ensuring they continue to access their grant payments smoothly.

If you haven’t yet replaced your card, now is the time to do so, as the SASSA Gold Cards will be completely useless after the deadline.

As Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe explained, “We appeal to beneficiaries who haven’t yet switched to Postbank Black Cards to get the new cards before 20 March 2025.

After this date, all current SASSA Gold Cards will stop working, regardless of their expiry date.”

How to Get Your New Postbank Black Card

To receive your new Postbank Black Card, all you need is a valid South African ID or a temporary ID.

No additional documents are required, ensuring the process is as simple and convenient as possible for all beneficiaries.

Plus, the card replacement is completely free, in line with both Postbank’s financial inclusion goals and SASSA’s commitment to supporting social welfare.

You can collect your new Postbank Black Card at various locations, including major retailers like Checkers, Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Usave, and Boxer across South Africa.

These locations have been carefully selected based on where most beneficiaries currently collect their grant payments, making it easier for you to replace your card.

No Waiting Period for the New Cards

Once you’ve received your Postbank Black Card, there’s no waiting period to start using it.

It’s ready for use immediately across all National Payment System channels, including ATMs and point-of-sale terminals at retailers.

The new cards also come with updated security features, giving you added peace of mind when making transactions.

Continued Benefits for Grant Recipients

When you switch to the Postbank Black Card, you’ll continue enjoying the same benefits that came with your SASSA Gold Card. These include:

  • One free card replacement per year
  • Three free withdrawals in stores per month
  • One free monthly statement over the counter

How to Find Your Nearest Card Replacement Site

Postbank has made it easy for you to find the nearest card replacement site.

Simply use your phone to dial 120218*3#, press 1, and then choose the number that corresponds to your province.

This will give you details on where to pick up your new Postbank Black Card.

Stay Safe and Avoid Scams

SASSA and Postbank also remind beneficiaries to be cautious of potential scams during this busy card replacement period.

Always ensure that you’re dealing with authorized personnel when handing over your ID and never accept cards from unofficial sources.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

With the deadline approaching, SASSA and Postbank urge all beneficiaries to replace their SASSA Gold Cards now, to avoid any disruption in their payments.

“Our message to social grant beneficiaries is clear—don’t wait for the last minute,” says Themba Matlou, Acting CEO of SASSA.

By switching early, you can ensure uninterrupted access to your payments.
