SAPS Intercepts Major Smuggling Operation Near Tshirundu Village in Limpopo on 11 January 2025

In a significant interception, the South African Police Service (SAPS) managed to halt a large-scale smuggling operation on Saturday, 11 January, during a routine patrol near Tshirundu village in Limpopo.

The operation’s scale and the suspects’ rapid escape highlight the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in managing cross-border crime.

Smugglers Abandon Goods and Flee into Zimbabwe

While on their mid-morning patrol, the SAPS National Intervention (Roving) Team received intelligence about suspicious activities near the Limpopo River.

They discovered that eight small boats were involved in smuggling goods across the border.

Upon seeing the approaching police, the suspects swiftly abandoned their cargo and fled across the Limpopo River into Zimbabwe, leaving behind items valued at approximately R500,000.

Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Thakeng, a spokesperson for SAPS, explained that the suspects saw the police and immediately took off, leaving most of the goods behind.

The items found included a variety of consumer goods such as alcoholic beverages, energy drinks, baked goods, flour, and even a chest fridge, all suspected to have been smuggled across the border.

Goods Seized: A Blow to the Smuggling Operation

The goods left behind by the fleeing smugglers were worth an estimated R500,000, a figure that underlines the scale of the thwarted operation.

Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the team’s quick and efficient response, highlighting that the successful disruption of such operations is vital for safeguarding local communities.

“This operation’s success underscores our commitment to combating cross-border crime and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” Hadebe stated, reaffirming the police’s ongoing efforts to deal with the rise in illegal activities along South Africa’s borders.

Strengthening Border Security with Operation Vala Umgodi

The escape of the smugglers into Zimbabwe emphasizes the challenges of enforcing border security, but the confiscation of valuable goods marks a key victory in the ongoing battle against illegal cross-border trade.

As part of these efforts, SAPS has launched Operation Vala Umgodi, a focused initiative to address illegal activities, especially in border areas.

While there is still much work to be done, the operation’s results show that authorities are making an impact.
