Samuel Eto’o elected Cameroun FA president

Former African footballer of the year Samuel Eto’o has been elected president of the Cameroun Football Federation (FECAFOOT)
He beat challenger Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the fourth Vice- President at the Confederation of African Football 43-37 votes.

Five candidates, who were supposed to contest the elections, pulled out on the morning of the election, leaving only Eto’o and Mbombo to fight for the position.

The 40-year old Olympic football gold medalist had hinged his campaign on massive policy and infrastructural reforms which apparently resonated.

He took to his Instagram handle to celebrate his achievement.

“I’ll be remembering today as one of the proudest moments of my life.

I’m deeply grateful to be elected as the new president of FECAFOOT.

“Every single vote represents the energy and ambition of our football family to take our beloved sport to a level we’ve never seen before.

Let’s get to work,” he said.

Golden Career
Eto’o had a glittering International and club football career.

He helped the Indomitable Lions of Cameroun win two successive Africa Cup of Nations in 2000 and 2002 and went on to become the tournament’s record scorer with 18 goals.

Eto’o also pushed Cameroun to become the second African nation after Nigeria to win the gold at the Sydney 2000 Olympics football event.

While playing for FC Barcelona, he won three La Liga titles as well as two European Champions League triumphs in 2006 and 2009, scoring in both finals.

In 2006, Eto’o became the first and only African to win the Spanish Golden Boot after netting 26 times in 34 matches.

The Camerounian scored 108 goals in 144 games for the Nou Camp side.
