Samir Nurkovic: 4 goals in 29 games over two seasons! Keep or ditch him?

Last weekend, Nurkovic netted his first league goal of the season as Chiefs beat Chippa United 3-1 to keep their slim title dream alive.

On Monday, former coach at Chiefs, Gavin Hunt, dropped a bombshell that Nurkovic actually wanted out in 2020.

The majority of fans would remember that Nurkovic missed a number of important games in Hunt’s first and only season at Chiefs due to injury and reported contractual disputes.

Now, Hunt has confirmed what was reported in the media at the time, saying the Serbian marksman no longer wanted to be at Naturena was actually true.

Chiefs kept him as they had little to no choice because they were banned from signing players at the time – and Hunt’s worry was that the club wasn’t going to be able to sign Nurkovic’s replacement if they had sold him.

The Amakhosi management pulled all the stops to ensure that Nurkovic stays by offering him an increased package to convince him to stay longer.

Nurkovic indeed stayed but one would agree that he has never been the same player he was upon his arrival in 2019.

Nurkovic’s contract is coming to an end in June, having spent three seasons at Chiefs – but so far, he’s just appeared to be a one-season wonder.

In his first season, Nurkovic hit 13 goals in 26 matches for Chiefs – and he was the drive behind the Soweto giants challenging for the league title.

However, he has looked out of form in the last two seasons with just four goals to his name in 29 league games for the Glamour Boys.

Last season, Nurkovic, despite featuring in 21 league games, found the back just thrice; a below-par performance in front of goal by his standards.

So far this season, Nurkovic has netted once in eight games having missed the majority of the season due to injury, but that is still not good enough.

Now, the big question is whether Chiefs should keep or ditch him – and considering all that’s highlighted above, things are certainly against Nurkovic.

Firstly, he wanted to leave the club but Chiefs convinced him to stay, and now that he’s stayed, Nurkovic hasn’t performed to the best of his ability.

Chiefs need a reliable striker who will give them more than what Nurkovic is giving them right now, and not renewing his contract may be the best decision for the club.

Overall, Nurkovic has netted 21 times with 10 assists to his name in 73 competitive matches since joining Chiefs almost three seasons ago.
