Rugby fans in Durban were treated to a historic spectacle on Saturday as 23-year-old Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu delivered a career-defining performance against Argentina.
With the Springboks cruising to a 67-30 victory over the Pumas, Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s exceptional display at Kings Park has catapulted him up the ranks of South Africa’s all-time Test points scorers.
A Record-Breaking 37 Points
Feinberg-Mngomezulu racked up an astonishing 37 points in the clash, combining three tries, eight conversions, and two penalties.
This feat surpassed the previous record of 35 points set 18 years ago by former Springbok fullback Percy Montgomery, who had amassed his tally against Namibia at Newlands back in 2007.
That day, Montgomery scored a try and nailed 12 conversions alongside two penalties in South Africa’s overwhelming 105-13 win.
Joining an Elite Club
With this performance, Feinberg-Mngomezulu became only the sixth Springbok to score 30 or more points in a single Test.
Coming into the match, he had accumulated 58 career Test points over 13 games—an average of 4.5 points per match.
By the final whistle in Durban, his tally had jumped to 95 points, tying him with Stefan Terblanche and Jesse Kriel at 32nd on the all-time list, and pushing his average up to 6.8 points per game.
Only James Small, with 100 points, sits ahead of him.
Springboks Surge to the Top of the Table
Beyond personal accolades, Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s heroics helped the Springboks secure a bonus-point victory, moving them to the top of this year’s Rugby Championship standings.
With one match remaining against Argentina at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium next Saturday, another win with a bonus point would ensure Rassie Erasmus’s squad retains their Rugby Championship crown.
A Moment for the Ages
For fans, Feinberg-Mngomezulu’s dazzling display was more than just numbers—it was a statement.
A young talent rising to the occasion, showing composure, skill, and finishing prowess, all while wearing the green and gold jersey.
Could this be one of the greatest individual performances in Springbok history? Only time will tell, but Saturday’s match has certainly set the bar incredibly high.
