Ruth Codd, the 29-year-old star of Celebrity Traitors and The Midnight Club, has revealed she has undergone a second leg amputation.
Sharing her story with characteristic honesty and humour, Ruth explained that years of using crutches had left her joints destroyed, and after previously having all her toes removed in 2021, this next step was necessary to improve her quality of life.
“I’ve already had to have all my toes amputated, so my foot looks like a little hamburger,” Ruth explained.
The Irish actress had first removed her left leg six years ago following a football injury that never healed properly, leaving her in constant pain.
Quality of Life Drove the Decision
Speaking on Under The Skin with Grace Neutral, Ruth reflected on the choice to amputate her second leg.
“It’s just the same situation as before — my quality of life.
It’s never going to get any better from this point, and I’ve had a lot of health problems over the last year,” she said.
Ruth admitted that while she hasn’t let her condition stop her from working, it has made performing more challenging.
With two prosthetic legs, however, she joked that she now feels “pretty unstoppable.”
Recovery and Hospital Stay
Ruth described the recovery process with openness and her usual humour.
She explained she would need at least a month for her limb to heal before fitting a prosthetic, using the same surgeon who removed her first leg.
“After a leg amputation, you spend about three or four days in hospital until the pain is under control,” she said.
“Then you’re home, but you have to give the residual limb time to heal before using a prosthetic.”
Ruth noted that while the initial downtime can be tough, her own experience has been relatively smooth.
Sharing the Update With Fans
Ruth took to TikTok from her parents’ home to break the news to her followers, blending honesty with humour. Addressing her fans, she said:
“Good news — we’ve had a full circle moment.
I’m back making TikTok content in my parents’ house.
Bad news — I can’t do it in front of that lovely blue floral wallpaper anymore because that room is upstairs.
I’ve just had my second below-knee amputation.”
Ruth even introduced her wheelchair, affectionately nicknamed “Fat Tony,” joking about its top speed and handling of steps.
Her followers flooded her with supportive messages, prompting Ruth to laugh: “Guys, stop being nice to me — it’s weirding me out.”
Humor in the Face of Adversity
Ruth’s update was full of her signature wit.
TikTok’s automatic captions hilariously mistranslated “below-knee amputation” as “bologna amputation,” sparking jokes from fans.
One commented, “Sorry to hear about your second bologna,” while others quipped about her Celebrity Traitors co-stars being to blame for her misfortune.
Even her The Fall of the House of Usher co-star Rahul Kohli joined in on the banter, prompting playful exchanges on social media.
The Journey Behind the Decision
For Ruth, the decision to amputate was years in the making.
She told the Irish Examiner that worsening nerve pain and repeated failed surgeries left her in a dark mental space.
“For years, I didn’t see it getting any better.
I was stuck in a really bad mindset and I was pissed off at life,” she said.
Amputating her first leg brought relief and allowed her to move forward with life, a process she hopes to replicate with her second leg.
From TikTok to Netflix Stardom
Ruth’s rise to fame began during the Covid pandemic on TikTok, where she created comedic content and videos raising disability awareness.
Her online presence caught the attention of Netflix casting teams, landing her the role of Anya in The Midnight Club with no prior acting experience.
She later starred as Juno Usher in the critically acclaimed The Fall of the House of Usher in 2023.
Through her candidness, resilience, and humor, Ruth Codd continues to inspire fans worldwide, sho
