In a recent press conference held on January 23, 2025, a spokesperson for Russia’s foreign ministry acknowledged the Vatican’s significant involvement in the return of Russian soldiers during two recent prisoner exchanges with Ukraine.
Maria Zakharova, the foreign ministry’s press director, highlighted the role of Pope Francis in facilitating this exchange, along with the contributions of Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the pope’s special envoy for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine.
Humanitarian Efforts Lead to Successful Prisoner Exchanges
Zakharova revealed that as part of the exchanges, 16 wounded Russian soldiers were returned home after a series of prisoner swaps that occurred in December and January.
These exchanges were brokered with the help of the United Arab Emirates, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in addressing the humanitarian aspects of the Russia-Ukraine war.
“We expect to continue constructive cooperation with the Vatican on humanitarian issues,” Zakharova added, acknowledging the Vatican’s ongoing diplomatic efforts and expressing Russia’s appreciation for the pope’s personal involvement in these exchanges.
Pope’s Balanced Position on the Conflict Recognized
While discussing the broader context of the war, Zakharova criticized what she referred to as “the West” for provoking the conflict, but praised the Vatican’s “balanced, verified position” on the matter.
She emphasized that Pope Francis, through his leadership, continues to make significant contributions toward efforts aimed at resolving the crisis in Ukraine.
Zakharova’s remarks reflected a desire for continued collaboration between Russia and the Vatican, with the foreign ministry reiterating its commitment to engaging with the Holy See on humanitarian and diplomatic efforts as the conflict unfolds.
