Struggles in Morocco
Mokwena made the bold decision to leave Mamelodi Sundowns last June and take the helm at Wydad AC. However, his time in North Africa hasn’t been smooth sailing.
Despite bringing along his trusted South African technical team, Mokwena’s stint has been marred by underwhelming results.
Wydad failed to live up to expectations in all competitions, with their hopes of winning silverware dashed after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Moghreb Atlético Tetuán in the Moroccan Throne Cup.
To make matters worse, Wydad has been unable to secure qualification for the CAF Champions League, and they are now guaranteed to finish behind RS Berkane in the league standings, who have already been crowned champions.
This disappointing season has left Mokwena with little to show for his efforts.
Unpaid Wages and a Future in Flux
Recent reports revealed that Mokwena, along with his technical director Sinethemba Badela and goalkeeper trainer Sean Louw, have not received their wages for the past eight months.
In response to these claims, Mokwena’s representative, Steven Kapeluschnik, addressed the situation and confirmed the coach’s exit plans.
Kapeluschnik revealed that despite the ongoing struggles, Mokwena will honor his contract and remain with the team until the end of the current season.
Afterward, he will part ways with the club on respectful terms, as agreed with the Wydad management.
A Possible Return to South Africa?
As Mokwena prepares to leave Wydad, questions about his next move arise.
Could the South African coach return to the PSL, where opportunities are plentiful?
With Orlando Pirates searching for a new manager and Kaizer Chiefs facing their own struggles, Mokwena may find his next challenge waiting back home.
