Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio is currently at the center of a serious legal storm.
The 22-year-old footballer, along with three former youth team-mates, faces allegations related to the distribution of child pornography following an investigation in Spain.
This has led to formal criminal proceedings, sending shockwaves through the football world.
What Exactly Happened According to Authorities
Back in June 2023, a video was reportedly filmed showing some Real Madrid youth players involved in a sexual encounter with a woman and an underage girl—who were 18 and 16 years old at the time.
The footage allegedly includes Asencio’s former teammates Ferran Ruiz, Andres Martin, and Juan Rodriguez.
Asencio is accused of soliciting this video, which was then allegedly shared among the players via WhatsApp.
All four accused were between 20 and 21 years old during the incident.
Legal Actions and Evidence in the Case
The Gran Canaria High Court has confirmed there’s enough evidence to move forward with criminal charges.
Allegations include invasion of privacy, distributing videos without the consent of those involved, solicitation of a minor for pornographic purposes, and possession of child pornography.
Spain’s Criminal Code is very clear on this: recording or sharing explicit content involving minors can lead to prison sentences ranging from three and a half to five years, or somewhat less if the recording was non-consensual but not shared.
Victims’ Condition and Potential Charges
Reports suggest both the woman and the underage girl involved are showing signs consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Their wellbeing has become a key part of the investigation.
The authorities have also revealed that charges were officially filed by the mother of the 16-year-old, who maintains that while the sexual activity was consensual, the recording and sharing of it were not. This distinction is important in the case.
Raul Asencio’s Response and Ongoing Investigation
After the incident, all four players had their phones confiscated by police.
Asencio attempted to have his involvement dismissed earlier this year, but the court decided to keep the investigation alive.
Despite this turmoil, Asencio recently experienced a breakthrough season at Real Madrid and even received a call-up to the Spain national team for the first time.
When discussing the allegations in a recent interview, he appeared calm and focused on his football, saying, “I think everyone is aware of what they are doing. For that reason, I am very calm.”
What Lies Ahead for Asencio and His Teammates
The prosecutor’s office now has the option to file formal charges and push for a criminal trial, or proceed independently.
The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the legal fate of Asencio and the other accused players.
For Real Madrid, this case adds a difficult chapter to what has already been a challenging season—one without any trophies so far.
The spotlight remains firmly on Asencio as the investigation unfolds.
