‘Ready to kill’: Newlyweds ditch honeymoon to join Ukraine troops

They were meant to be on a blissful, carefree honeymoon, but instead one newlywed couple from Ukraine are in the midst of war…

Just a few hours after saying ‘I do’, Yaryna Arieva and Sviatoslav Fursin ditched the traditional honeymoon vacation to take up arms against the Russian invasion.

And they have no regrets, insist the couple.


Speaking to CNN, the couple revealed that they had brought forward their May wedding to last week when Russian troops first invaded Ukraine

The young couple have joined their country’s resistance – the Ukrainian Territorial Defence Forces – which is made up of hundreds of thousands of civilians who have all pledged to fight for freedom.

Based in Kyiv, husband Sviatoslav leaves his wife to go on daily combat missions whilst she works behind the frontlines.

Armed with rifles and wearing camouflage gear, the couple also campaign for assistance with money, food, weapons, and medical supplies. .

Wife Yaryna told Don Lemon: “It’s hard to understand this new reality that we have.

“No one here is saying that we will lose, or is crying. Everyone here believes we will win. It’s all just a question of time. So, I am very happy to see this great amount of people, really being ready to fight. Being ready to kill for their land. Having no doubt about our win in this war.

“Life here is different, but it is life. People joke and laugh. That is very interesting to see. It is another kind of life that has changed with the beginning of war but it is life”.

Husband Sviatoslav added that he believed their fight was not in vain. He voiced his desire to see family, friends and comrades to be “all in one place and drink a good glass of wine. And say to everybody, ‘Hurray, war is ended, we won.’”
