What was meant to be a joyful getaway turned devastating for the Shahwan family.

Lynda Shahwan, a much-loved BBC Radio Wales presenter and creative force behind several cherished programs, has sadly passed away following a car crash while on holiday in Canada with her husband and two sons.

She was 53 years old.

A Loss Felt Far Beyond the Studio

Lynda’s unexpected passing has left an enormous hole not only in her family’s heart but also within the BBC Wales family.

Her warmth, humour, and creativity left a lasting impression on everyone she worked with over her more than 25-year career in broadcasting.

Those who knew her best are remembering her not just as a talented presenter, but as a true friend.

Terry Walton, her co-host on the popular gardening podcast Terry Walton’s Plotcast, described their collaboration as one of the most meaningful chapters of his career.

“The past two years have been the most fulfilling and cherished broadcasting I have done,” he said, reflecting on their time working side by side.

He spoke fondly of their deep friendship that blossomed beyond the studio, saying they would often relax and share life’s joys and challenges after each recording.

A Unique Presence Behind the Mic

Terry also praised Lynda’s natural ability to bring energy and ease to every show.

“Our chemistry and her creative talent made every episode a gem of gardening knowledge.

It was always such fun, while still being packed with useful insights,” he said.

He highlighted her professionalism and the calming effect she had, which made every recording session a joy.

Decades of Dedication to Radio Wales

Lynda began her journey with BBC Radio Wales back in 1999, and since then, she contributed to nearly every part of the station’s output.

Her long-time colleague and Head of Radio Wales, Carolyn Hitt, remembered her as a truly special individual.

“Lynda brought such brilliance both on and off the air.

Her passion and innovation were felt in everything she touched,” Hitt said.

She recalled how Lynda had once co-hosted Roy Noble’s morning show, where she earned the affectionate nickname, “The Lily from Caerphilly.”

In recent years, she had returned to the airwaves with her dream project — co-hosting and producing Plotcast alongside Terry Walton.

The project was a perfect example of her creative flair and love for storytelling.

Grief Shared Across the BBC Wales Family

The news of Lynda’s passing has shaken her colleagues to the core.

Roy Noble himself shared his deep sorrow, expressing how stunned and heartbroken everyone at the station has been.

“It’s a sudden, sudden loss to her family and to us. Her legacy will always be remembered,” he said.

BBC Wales journalist Sue Charles expressed her devastation in a message on social media, writing: “Lynda Shahwan was one of the loveliest, most talented people I’ve ever worked with. A wonderful friend and colleague.”

Howard Griffiths, another colleague, echoed similar sentiments, describing himself as “crying and in shock.”

He remembered her as “a wonderfully kind and thoughtful friend,” recalling their close working relationship during their time together at BBC Radio Wales and BBC Events.

Remembering a Voice That Brought Comfort

Lynda’s voice was one of warmth and authenticity — a constant companion to thousands of listeners across Wales.

Her passing is more than a professional loss; it’s a deeply personal one to those who shared a microphone, a coffee, or even just a kind moment with her.

As the BBC Wales community mourns this sudden loss, their thoughts remain with her husband Sharif — himself a respected BBC colleague — and their two sons, whose lives have been forever changed.
