MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is currently recovering in a hospital after a horrific crash left him with 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
The accident occurred during the Qatar Grand Prix and was described by the rider who collided with him, Fabio Di Giannantonio, as “the worst scene of my life.”
The Crash and Its Aftermath
Martin lost control of his bike while racing, causing him to fall with Di Giannantonio close behind.
Unable to avoid the world champion, Di Giannantonio’s front wheel collided with Martin’s back.
Martin then slid several meters across the asphalt, eventually coming to a halt, clearly in intense pain.
Medical teams were quick to respond, but it was evident that his injuries were severe.
A Traumatic Scene for His Loved Ones
The crash was witnessed by Martin’s girlfriend, Maria Monfort Matutes, who was watching from the paddock.
As the medics attended to Martin, the full extent of his injuries became apparent.
Doctors had to insert a drain into his chest to remove air and alleviate pressure on his lungs, highlighting the seriousness of his condition.
Fortunately, Martin’s brain, cervical spine, and abdominal organs were not damaged, providing a glimmer of relief.
The 27-year-old champion shared an update with his fans on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the fact that things could have been much worse.
“I’ll try to keep you informed,” he wrote, reassuring his followers.
A History of Setbacks
This latest injury comes after a series of previous setbacks for Martin.
Earlier in the season, he sustained multiple bone fractures during pre-season crashes.
These injuries had only just begun to heal when the collision with Di Giannantonio occurred.
The View from Di Giannantonio
For Di Giannantonio, the crash was traumatic.
He recounted the moment, saying, “He was right in front of me for a while, I was pretty close to him and, of course, tried to overtake him.”
He continued, explaining how Martin’s body fell directly in front of him, leaving him no chance to avoid the collision.
“At over 200 km/h, I had no chance. I was thinking about him the whole time, and I had goosebumps. It was the worst scene of my life.”
Martin’s Recovery and Uncertainty Ahead
Martin will remain in the hospital for observation, though the timeline for his return to racing is uncertain.
Given the severity of his injuries, it is unlikely he will be able to compete in the upcoming Jerez Grand Prix scheduled for April 25.
His fans, however, remain hopeful for his recovery and a swift return to the track.
