It wasn’t just the Springboks’ crushing win that had fans buzzing at DHL Stadium — the skies above Cape Town put on a show of their own.

For the very first time in South African airspace, Qatar Airways delivered a dramatic low-altitude flyover, giving rugby fans a moment to remember.

A Historic Flyover Before Kickoff

About an hour before the Springboks and Barbarians took to the field, Qatar Airways surprised spectators with the announcement that its Boeing BB777 aircraft — flight QR3245 — would be flying low over the stadium.

With cameras ready and eyes on the sky, fans watched as the massive plane glided overhead, marking a historic moment at the venue.

Springboks Secure a Resounding Victory

Despite the cold and rainy weather, the South African side brought the heat on the field, thrashing the Barbarians 54-7.

The energy in the stadium was electric, amplified even more by the unique aviation spectacle that preceded the action.

Questions Rise Over Airline Choice

While many were in awe of the flyover, it also sparked a bit of online debate.

Some South Africans questioned why a foreign airline had been chosen for such a patriotic moment, especially when local carriers like SAA or FlySafair have previously done similar flyovers at the same venue.

One social media user, @NielM25614, asked what many were thinking: “Where are the proud South African SAA?”

It’s All in the Sponsorship

The answer lies in the branding. Saturday’s match was held as part of the Qatar Airways Cup — a competition fully backed by the airline.

That connection not only explains the flyover but also highlights Qatar Airways’ expanding footprint in the world of rugby.

Their sponsorships now include the United Rugby Championship (URC), European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR), and the upcoming Qatar Airways Lions Tour to Australia later this year.

Celebrating 20 Years in South Africa

Beyond the match and the branding, the flyover also celebrated a milestone — two decades since Qatar Airways launched operations in South Africa.

This event was also the first time the Springboks and Barbarians men’s teams faced off on South African soil, adding to the historic atmosphere.

Did You See It?

Whether you were at the stadium or watching from home, the sight of a massive jet soaring over the stadium before a major international rugby clash definitely left an impression.
