When you think of Nigeria’s democratic evolution, few names resonate as deeply as Chief Bisi Akande.

Turning 87, Akande is not just an elder statesman; he’s a living bridge connecting generations of political progress in the country.

Former Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, took time on Sunday to honor the former Osun State Governor, highlighting the extraordinary imprint Akande has left on Nigerian politics.

A Life Woven into Nigeria’s Political Fabric

Speaking from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Adewole painted a picture of Akande as more than a politician.

“Chief Akande’s life story is woven into the fabric of our nation’s political history, especially in the South-West,” he said.

Adewole noted that Akande distinguished himself as a governor not by ostentation, but by prudence, accountability, and a modest lifestyle.

Leadership Beyond Luxury

“As governor, he demonstrated that true leadership is measured not by personal luxury but by sacrifice, service, and the legacy one leaves behind,” Adewole emphasized.

He added that Akande’s approach to governance—a combination of frankness, consistency, and principle—has earned him respect across political, ethnic, and religious divides.

A Bridge Across Generations

Adewole, who also serves as Secretary of the Akande Foundation, described Akande as a central figure in Nigeria’s progressive political movement, from the Action Group and Unity Party of Nigeria to the Alliance for Democracy, and ultimately to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“In an age of political convenience, Chief Akande remains a symbol of conviction, speaking the truth without fear, favour, or malice,” he noted.

Champion of Values and Federalism

Beyond politics, Adewole highlighted Akande’s enduring commitment to honesty, modesty, hard work, and federalism.

“As we celebrate this milestone, we pray for his continued health, peace of mind, and strength.

May his life continue to inspire leaders today and those yet to come,” he said.

A Lifetime of Service

Akande’s career reflects discipline, integrity, and an unwavering dedication to the common good.

He governed Osun State from 1999 to 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy and became the pioneer National Chairman of the APC in 2013 when multiple parties—including the Action Congress of Nigeria, the All Nigeria Peoples Party, and the Congress for Progressive Change—merged.

Adewole concluded, “Baba, at 87, you remain a guiding light. Nigeria salutes you. Osun celebrates you. History records you.”
