In a powerful moment for justice, a man responsible for a terrifying spree of crimes in Mamelodi has finally been held accountable.
The Pretoria High Court delivered a historic sentence to 34-year-old Doctor Nkurube Maruma, a serial offender whose actions left countless victims traumatized.
A Jaw-Dropping Sentence: 491 Years Behind Bars
On Wednesday, 21 May, Maruma stood before Judge Mashudu Munzhelele as the court handed down a staggering sentence—491 years in prison.
This came after he was found guilty of an alarming number of crimes, including 19 rapes, 15 housebreakings, several cases of aggravated robbery, and a string of other serious charges.
Although the sentence sounds almost unbelievable, the judge ruled that the years would run concurrently with a life imprisonment term.
In addition, Maruma was officially declared unfit to own or possess a firearm.
DNA Evidence Played a Crucial Role
Even though Maruma denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty, the evidence against him was overwhelming. Forensic specialists managed to link him to the crimes through DNA evidence, which played a pivotal role in sealing his fate.
Prosecutor Advocate Vusimuzi Tshabalala built a strong case, presenting emotional and courageous testimony from several victims.
Many of them recounted chilling stories of being attacked in the supposed safety of their homes.
What Happens Next?
While Maruma begins serving what is essentially a lifetime behind bars, the focus now shifts to healing for the victims and the broader Mamelodi community.
The ruling also reinforces the power of DNA technology in modern investigations and the importance of survivor voices in courtrooms.
