Pope Francis has sent a heartfelt message of condolence to both church and civil authorities in Myanmar and Thailand after a devastating earthquake struck Southeast Asia, leaving more than 150 people dead and causing significant destruction across the region.
The Pope, deeply saddened by the loss of life, extended his prayers to those affected by the disaster, offering spiritual closeness and comfort to the victims’ families and communities.
In a statement delivered by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope expressed his grief over the immense damage caused by the powerful earthquake.
“His Holiness offers heartfelt prayers for the souls of the deceased and the assurance of his spiritual closeness to all affected by this tragedy,” the message read.
Furthermore, Pope Francis also prayed for the emergency personnel, asking for divine strength and perseverance as they continue their efforts to assist the injured and displaced.
Details of the Earthquake and Aftershocks
The earthquake struck at 12:50 p.m. local time on March 28, 2025, near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. With a magnitude of 7.7, it was followed by a 6.4-magnitude aftershock.
In Myanmar, at least 144 people have been confirmed dead, and over 700 have been injured.
The disaster also severely impacted Thailand, where at least eight lives were lost in Bangkok, with a 33-story building under construction collapsing.
The situation remains dire, with more than 90 people still missing in the Thai capital.
Thai officials, including Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, fear the death toll could continue to rise.
Ongoing Crisis in Myanmar Amid Civil War
The earthquake’s impact is even more devastating in Myanmar, which is already in the midst of an ongoing civil war and humanitarian crisis.
In response to the catastrophe, Myanmar’s military junta has declared a state of emergency in the capital Naypyidaw and five other regions, urging the international community to provide humanitarian aid.
Damage to Catholic Churches in the Affected Areas
Catholic communities in Myanmar were also heavily affected by the earthquake.
Several churches in Mandalay have been damaged, with St. Michael’s Catholic Parish reported to be the hardest hit.
St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Taunggyi, located in Shan State, also sustained significant damage.
Local church leaders have called for support to help those who have lost their homes in the wake of the disaster.
Ongoing Search for Survivors and Relief Efforts
As emergency rescue operations continue in both Myanmar and Thailand, authorities are working tirelessly to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
Search teams are focused on locating survivors amidst the widespread destruction, and the international community is mobilizing to provide aid to the affected regions.
