A profound sense of loss enveloped Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, on Saturday as political leaders, dignitaries, and community members came together to bid farewell to Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District.

Among those present were the President of the 10th Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State.

The funeral ceremony was held at St. Williams Catholic Church Cathedral in Lafia, attracting a large turnout, including former Nasarawa Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, Deputy Governor Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, Speaker Danladi Jatau of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro, and Prof. Sadiq Umar, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party.

Senate Pays Tribute to a Patriot and Servant-Leader

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin delivered a heartfelt condolence message on behalf of the National Assembly.

He described the late Senator Akwashiki, who passed away on December 31, 2025, in an Indian hospital at the age of 52, as a rare patriot, a servant-leader, and a staunch advocate for national unity and stability.

Barau emphasized that Akwashiki’s contributions to legislative excellence and public service would be deeply missed, noting that his commitment left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s political and social landscape.

Governor Sule Urges Unity and Forgiveness

In his remarks, Governor Abdullahi Sule called on political, religious, and community leaders to set aside differences and work collaboratively for the progress of Nasarawa State and the nation.

He stressed that peace and harmony must remain a priority so citizens can continue to reap the benefits of democracy.

Sule reminded attendees that death spares no one and urged politicians to forgive past political grievances.

He encouraged the bereaved family to take comfort in Akwashiki’s impactful life and legacy, highlighting that the late senator helped countless people throughout his career.

“Death reminds us of our destiny and the fleeting nature of life,” Sule said.

“Today we bury a brother, tomorrow another joins that journey. This is a trend we are all part of, whether politician, religious leader, or citizen.”

Spiritual Reflections on Leadership and Mortality

Bishop Matthew Ishaya Audu of the Catholic Diocese of Jos delivered the homily, praising Akwashiki as a devout Christian, a grassroots politician, and a distinguished Nigerian.

He reminded the congregation of humanity’s mortality and the inevitability of death.

The bishop encouraged humility, dedication, and prayerfulness, urging citizens to pursue prosperity while maintaining strong moral and religious principles.

He also reminded political leaders that true leadership is a sacred duty, not a commercial venture.

Citing Saint Paul in Romans 14:7-8, Bishop Audu reflected: “Whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. Our lives and actions are for a greater purpose beyond ourselves.”

He offered consolation to the bereaved, affirming that faith in Christ would provide comfort amid the profound loss.

Community Leaders Honour the Late Senator

The Aren Eggon and paramount ruler of the Eggon nation, Ahmed Ubangari, expressed gratitude to sympathizers who supported the family during the mourning period.

Senator Akwashiki, who served in both the 9th and 10th Senate, chaired several key committees, including those on the Air Force and Media and Public Affairs, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service to his constituents and the nation at large.
