Police Condemn Deadly Attack on Community Patrollers in Marry Me Informal Settlement Soshanguve

The recent tragic attack on community-based patrollers in the Marry Me Informal Settlement, Soshanguve, has sparked outrage.

The violent incident, which occurred on March 22, 2025, left five people dead and seven others injured.

The Ministry of Police has strongly condemned the attack, and investigations are underway to find those responsible for this senseless act of violence.

The Incident and Crime Scene Investigation

The attack unfolded in the early hours of March 22, 2025, when five individuals confronted a group of community patrollers in Marry Me Informal Settlement, Extension 3.

According to South African Police Services, the victims, who were patrolling the area as part of their efforts to reduce crime, were shot at and some were partially burned.

Police arrived at the scene at 06:00 and found four people with gunshot wounds.

The situation escalated when, on March 23, one of the injured, a 20-year-old man, passed away in the hospital, bringing the death toll to five.

Minister Mchunu’s Response and Condemnation

Minister of Police, Bheki Mchunu, expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, condemning the “cold-blooded murders” and emphasizing the importance of the patrollers’ role in enhancing the safety of their community.

In a statement, Mchunu stated that these unarmed community members had been committed to combating crime and creating safer neighborhoods, and that their bravery should be recognized.

He also praised the swift police action in launching a manhunt for the perpetrators and urged both police and community members to remain vigilant.

Mchunu made a strong appeal for cooperation from the residents of Marry Me and surrounding areas, stressing that any information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspects would be crucial in ensuring justice.

Ongoing Investigation and Appeal for Information

The case is being handled by the Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit, which has charged the suspects with five counts of murder and seven counts of attempted murder.

A manhunt is currently underway, with police appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation. Citizens are urged to come forward and help bring the responsible individuals to justice.
